Hello Everyone,
We will begin with Blogging in this post.
It will be for Module 1.
Please review my comments in BB regarding how I want blogs to progress and what I expect in your blogging.
I would like to start by having you tell us about yourself.

  1. I will start as to get the ball rolling. I grew up in Munden, KS. Munden is in northcentral KS. Very small town. I attended Cloud County Comm Coll in Concordia KS for one semester before coming to FHSU. I have been here ever since. I earned my bachelors in Secondary Social Studies in 1995 and my Masters in Educ Admin in 2004. I will finish my Education Specialist degree the semester and then I am working toward a doctorate degree. I taught high school social studies for 6 years before coming to FHSU. I have 3 wonderful children, Braden 16, Sidney 15, and Konnor 11. I have the best time of my life with my children. They are everything to me and we have some wonderful wonderful times together. I think our "shared" passion is our mustangs. Braden has a 1971 Mach 1, Sidney has a 99 Convertible, Konnor already has his car, a 67 GT Fastback mustang, and mine is a 67 Coupe. They each have a story and there are so many other things I would like to share but lets first hear about YOU. Thanks, Splichal

    1. Awesome, my first car was a '71 Mach 1!! It was a little much for me at 14, but now that I am older I would like to restore it!!

      Excited for a great semester!!

    2. My dad works at the Ford assembly plant in KCMO. He actually started restoring a '65 Mustang (which was in TERRIBLE condition) when we lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but we ended up moving shortly there after so he donated it to the community college's automotive program. It would be cool to see if they CC ever did anything with it!

    3. Oh the Mustangs..I keep telling my husband that I want a 65 Mustang, but he tells me I would have to sell my real horses to have a horse with wheels. I'm not ready to part with my horses just yet. Someday....

    4. My best friend in high school drove an older mustang. I can remember the feeling of "freedom" driving around in that car. I think it made us feel a little "cooler" than we were. Good memories.

    5. My first car was a '73 powder blue mustang--more rust than blue!

    6. My brother has a 2007 mustang, white with blue racing stripes up the middle. He would love to have an older model, but what he has works for him right now.

    7. Great to hear something about you; I am impressed at your children's car ownership! That's wonderful to hear.

    8. My husband has a 66 Mustang. I jokingly tell everyone that I fell in love with his car long before I fell in love with him. He started "restoring" it as my Christmas present the year we got engaged.... it is still in the process and we have been married 23 years... marriage, houses and kids have taken the $$ that could have been used to finish it. But have been talking about starting it with our sons.

    9. I have three kids as well and it always amazes me how they each are so different from one another, yet we all have so much fun as a family. I can relate to having the best times of your life with your kids because I feel exactly the same way!

How cool is it that you all share the same passion of Mustangs.

Looking forward to a great semester!!

  2. Hi my name is Jennifer Pence and I am originaly from northern California. I moved to south central Kansas about four years ago and really love it here (even if it is hard to get used to the cold weather). I am in the process of getting my elementary education degree with a minor in special education. I have about a year and a half to go and can not wait.
I have wanted to be a teacher since I was about eight years old. I grew up with a learning disability and have learned ways to work around the struggles I have had. I want to teach studnets that just because they struggle that does not mean they have to give up. My resource teachers in Elementary school really helped me alot because they believed in me and my abilities. I first worked as a substitute para educator and then worked with a student with cerebal palsey for three years. I am now a substitute teachers and love going to work each and every day. My experience working in a variety of classrooms have really helped me become prepared for my future.
In my free time I like to go fishing and travel with my fiance. I am really a kid at heart at times.

    1. Jennifer, your motivation to become a teacher is touching! It's awesome that you want to teach special education, it definitely requires a special kind of person - I really think it's great! I have a brother and two sisters who having learning disabilities and try to help them through school as much as possible. It's quite the task!

    2. Hey Jennifer! Looks like we'll be talking a lot on skype again this semester :) I'm looking forward to another semester of working with you! Good luck!

    3. Jennifer- I completely agree with you on the importance of getting a variety of experience in different classrooms. I absolutely love subbing. I love getting to see what works and doesn't work in different classes, with different students, at different grades. I have really tried to be open when it comes to subbing in things like special ed, art, gym, music....basically anything. I think that it will make us a better teacher having been in everyone else's shoes....even if it was just for a day!

    4. Jennifer,

I think that is really neat that you took your life experiences and created something great.
I think substituting in many different learning environments does help prepare you for your future career.I have worked as a Para educator for five years in Special Education and cannot begin to tell you how much I have learned from the experience.
Good luck to you this semester and I look forward to getting to know you better throughout this course!!

  3. Hi! I’m Emily. I am in my last semester of classes before student teaching. I am doing all of my college courses online from home in Leawood, Kansas. Growing up I moved around quite a bit due to my dad’s job so I have also lived in South Carolina, Ohio, and Michigan.

In addition to being a full-time student I work part-time at Archiver’s, a scrapbooking store in Overland Park, and babysit when I can fit it into my already busy schedule. Yes, scrapbooking is one of my hobbies, but I also enjoy baking and reading.

I still live at home with Mom and Dad, but I’m okay with that. My younger sister, Andrea, was at home too, but decided to go back to K-State this semester. I also have an older brother, Adam, who lives in Ankeny, Iowa with his fiancĂ©e, JoJo. I’m looking forward to their wedding this summer, as well as gaining another sister. There are also three dogs in this family. Winchester is Andrea’s dog, so he’s in Manhattan. Bailey is my mom’s dog, and Jefferson is like my child.

Good Luck to everyone this semester!

    2. Hi Emily, I would say I'm an avid scrapbooker as well- as long as I'm on break. Over Christmas holiday I did my daughter's 1-2 yr book. I'm thrilled to cross that one off the list!

  4. Hi everyone! My name is Kristle Canady. I live in Coffeyville, Ks. This is my final semester of classes/internships and I hope to student teach in the fall. I am so excited! I have two amazing children. My son Jake is 4 and my daughter Lexie is 18 months. They keep me very busy and entertained! Along with being a mommy and a full time student I also substitute for our local school district. I love every minute I get to spend in the classroom. I used to think that I would like to teach 2nd-3rd grade but after interning/subbing I really don't care what grade I teach. I think you just have to be open minded. Subbing has really helped me be flexible as there are days where I sub in Kindergarten in the morning and 6th grade in the afternoon. I think there is something special about each grade! Looking forward to working with everyone!

  5. Hello! My name is Nicole Schell and this is my LAST semester before student teaching!!! (Can you tell that I'm excited about that??) This is my second time as a student at FHSU. I graduated in 1993 with a BA in English before getting married. We proceeded to have 3 children, so I chose to stay at home until they were all in school full-time. Now, at 40, I finally know what I want to be when I grow up! I have subbed for several different school districts in the past and worked as a Title I reading para for two years at Cheney Elementary School. Those last two years cemented my belief that teaching elementary school is what I should be doing. My husband and children (Mason 17, Calvin 14, and Whitney 12) have been wonderful through this whole process. When I am not studying, I keep pretty busy with all of the kids' academic, music, and sports events. I also like to quilt, read, and write. I have started two novels but never seem to find the time to work on them:) (Imagine that!!) I am also an avid NFL & MLB fan! We also have a dog, Angel, who is 7 months old. She has been such a blessing to our family. Best of luck to everyone this semester!!

  6. My name is Jeni Weilert. I graduated from Garden Plain High School in 1997. I went on to attend Colby Community College and got my degree in Veterinary Technology. I worked as a Registered Veterinary Technician until my oldest daughter was born. I then became a stay at home mom. I still maintain my Veterinary Technology license through yearly continuing education. My husband and I own a small custom harvesting operation and also farm and raise cattle. My husband and I both grew up with the farming lifestyle and I am fortunate to be able to raise our children the same way. My husband and I have two wonderful daughters who are the pivot points in my life. My oldest daughter, Jalynn is in the first grade and I also have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, Jayleigh. My husband and I moved to Hays in 2008 when the custom harvesting grew big enough to be a full time operation. The wheat harvest run extends from northern Oklahoma to South Dakota and fall harvest is all around the Hays area.
I have always enjoyed getting to spend time with children. Even when working as a Veterinary Technician, I found ways to feed my love of working with children by going into classrooms and educating on pet care and also by giving riding lessons at a local stable. After moving to Hays, I started looking for outlets. I started teaching Faith Formation classes at my church and quickly realized that seeing the kids for an hour once a week was not enough. I wanted to make more of a difference. With the support of my family and husband, I decided to pursue my degree in Elementary Education. With the ability to take classes online, I can pursue my degree and still remain actively involved with my daughters and the farm. I look forward to working with everyone in this class this semester. Best of luck to everyone!

  7. Hi Everyone! My name is Adrianne Hoefler, this is also my last semester before student teaching (except for one summer course- that i'm not thinking about right now!). I am so looking forward to student teaching in the fall, and also this class. I know I'm a little odd- but I have always enjoyed history and social studies- I'm one of those people who reads non fiction for fun when I have the time. I am currently living in San Antonio TX with my husband and our two daughter; Abbigale who is five, and Madison who is two. My hubby is in the military so we travel around quite a bit. We have been enjoying the sun down here for about a year now, prior to SA we lived in Germany for six years. I hope to teach the third of fourth grade although I would love to teach any grade, I prefer to engage with students who are a little more independent in their thoughts. I am truly excited about this semester and look forward to learning with each and every one of you! Have a great semsester.

I “see” that your husband is in the military. My boyfriend is also in the military. He is a First Sergeant in the Army. Thank goodness he does not have to move around a lot but he has been on 4 deployments to Iraq and Kuwait. Sharing a life with someone in the military makes me very proud and yet it can be very trying. :)
Good Luck with your last semester before Student Teaching. This is also my last semester before Student Teaching!

    3. I am so jealous that you are in San Antonio right now :) My brother and his family lived in Round Rock for several years before they moved to Amarillo for his job. We love coming to Sea World and the River Walk. Two years ago we went to Schlitterbahn and found it to be very crowded and the water in one park very cold. I hope you are enjoying your time there with so much to do. That is exciting to have lived in Germany. My mother was adopted from an orphanage in Erlangin, Germany when she was 3. She has always wanted to go back, but the it is a little costly. What city did you live in while you were stationed over there? I look forward to getting to know you more as we talk on skype. Good luck!!

    4. This is also my last semester, but I will also be taking a summer class and am trying not to think about it! My father was in the military, and I lived in Germany for three years while I was in high school. It was probably my favorite place that we lived. I've also been to San Antonio several times and would definitely rather be there right now than dealing with this freezing Kansas weather!

I enjoy traveling, surfing the internet, watching television and reading. I have about three more semesters left to complete degree. I am so looking forward to graduation day.
For me teaching is not a job it is a joy. I love to see the expression on the students faces when they understand a concept that they were having difficulties with.

    1. I agree with your thoughts on teaching not being a job, but rather a joy. I have a lot of friends that tell me I won't make any money... My response to them is always the same. I'm not doing it for the money, I'm doing it because it's what I want to do and will love every minute of it. If I wanted to a job that was going to make me a ton of money I would've decided to do something different more than 4 years ago!

    2. I love that you mentioned that teaching is a joy for you! I feel the same way! Anyone that is going into teaching in order to get a job is definitely doing it for the wrong reason. I think that it has to be something that you really, really love!

  10. Hi all it sounds like most of us are in our last semester before student teaching and I am no exception. My family and I live in a small town south of KCMO called Archie. I have 6 children and am very busy with being a mom. I have been taking on line classes since January of 2009 and look forward to being done @ the end of this year! My oldest son graduates this may and we are preparing to send him to Missouri Western State University in the fall. This is our first child to graduate and the youngest child is in the 2nd grade so am ok with having one graduate this fall and can't wait to see what the next chapter of his life brings. Good luck to everyone this semester.

Yippie Skippie, as Dr. Walizer says... I live in Hutchinson, KS but am from Manhattan, KS (GO CATS!) I have a family of 5 and I am the only girl, with 3 sons and a husband I have found that I enjoy cooking and have been known to "throw down" on the grill. As a family we enjoy spending time outdoors when we are not locked in a basketball gym watching game after game after game. I am secretly a history lover and am excited to find what this class has to offer.
I look forward to getting to know all of you!

  13. Hello fellow classmates and Mr. Splichal!

My name is Angela Ryan, you can call me Angie. I live in Parsons, Kansas, which is way down in the southeast corner. I have 3 wonderful children, Brielle age 14, Noah age 9, and Luke age 7. All of my children participate in sports and keep me extremely busy! My daughter Brielle is a high school cheerleader and plays golf. My son Noah does it all; he plays football, baseball, basketball, and loves to golf. My son Luke plays football and baseball. I keep trying to tell him he could be a state champ if he would start wrestling!
I work as a Title 1 para-educator in a rural K-8 elementary school where I have been for 6 years. We have 400 students in our school and I work with students in all grades! I love my “job” although I do not like to call it a job; for my interaction with the students means far more to me than any job ever could. When I began working at the school I worked strictly in the Kindergarten classroom but then after those horrible budget cuts and the release of staff, I now work in all grades. I can honestly say I enjoy the lower grades, K-1, or upper grades 7-8 the most. A big difference I know but somehow those are the grades I fell in love with. I am also in charge of taking care of our students with diabetes in our school. After completing diabetic training I was given the huge responsibility of performing shots and regulating insulin pumps. Although I was scared at first, it has become a very rewarding part of my “job.”
This is my last semester before completing my Student Teaching in the fall. It has been a long 3 years with many obstacles along the way but here I am and let me tell you…I am ready to be a teacher!

    2. Reading this post and reply reminds me of a famous quote. I like what Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Women are like teabags. We don’t know our true strength until we are in hot water!” Not necessarily being in hot water, but when we are given many challenges we are strong and we learn that we are capable of much more than we ever dreamed.

I work full time at GTM Sportswear here in town in the sales dept. They are very flexible and allow me to adjust my schedule to get out in the classroom for internships. I am challenging myself this semester to finish my coursework and student teach this coming fall. It will take some extra commitment but I know it will be worth it in the end. 18. Hello All! My name is Richard Rios (Ricky) if you wish. I am currently in my second to last semester before I get to student teach. So there is a good possibility that I may being asking some questions from those of you that have already had internships within the program already. I live in Garnett, KS which is in southeast Kansas. I currently work for a Southeast Kansas Mental Health as a case manager. So I have the chance to work with about 20 different kids at any given time in a variety of different settings. With my current job I am also afforded the ability to go into several different schools in a work week. I have had many good chances to view different teachers at all different grade levels and get many new ideas. I live with my wife Erin and my dog Charlie who is a bassett hound. In my free time I like to go to sporting events. You name it I will probably go to it if I have the chance too. I also enjoy going out to see live music mainly Red Dirt country which is found mostly in Texas but has a lot of artist making their way into the area. I have a previous degree a Bachelors in Psychology which I obtained from Emporia State in December of 06'. I wish you all the best this semester and good luck!

  19. Hello all! My name is Shannon (Haug) York. I’ve been married to my high school sweet heart for six months now and we’ve started our newlywed lives up in Delta Junction, Alaska! I am a born and raised small town Kansas girl but moved up here to Alaska almost two years ago. It has been a very rewarding yet hard experience. Being far from family is not my favorite thing, nor are the long dark winters, but the beautiful summers and adventures to be found make it worth it. I also have troubles with the time change. Alaska is three hours behind Kansas so I constantly have to remind myself of that for schoolwork and such. Right now it is the dead of winter up here. Today it was a whopping forty below zero and we have about five hours of daylight. Since I can’t get out much I spend a lot of time indoors exercising, doing schoolwork, and taking care of my two dogs and two ferrets. When I can get out I really enjoy photographing this beautiful place. I also work as a substitute teacher and part time tutor.

This is my last semester of full classes at FHSU. I will begin student teaching in the fall and graduate that December! Finally! I’m so excited to start teaching here in Alaska. I’ve always had a passion for helping children and I finally got to utilize that passion last semester through my internships. There is no better feeling than making a difference in a young child’s life. I’ve had many great educators in my life and I believe they are who influenced me to want to become a professional educator. I’ll never forget the feeling I felt when a teacher took specific time out of their busy schedule to help me understand a concept, to help me see things differently, and to simply teach me. I want my life to consist of helping children succeed. I want to make a difference in children’s lives one way or another. I think that being an elementary educator means providing all students with a meaningful learning experience. To me that includes teaching them the curriculum in a clear understandable way as well as providing them with the tools and building blocks they need to succeed and thrive in their future. Even if they’re only six or seven year olds their lives can be greatly impacted and changed by one year with an elementary educator.

I’m excited to get this semester rolling and I’m looking forward to collaborating and working with all of you! Good luck!

  22. Hi my name is Kayla Rupa. I was born in Santa Maria, CA. I use to live with my mom, dad and brother who is 13 months younger than I am until I moved in with my boyfriend of 3 and a half years this summer.I grew in the military, and I pretty much moved all through out California and back and forth to Colorado. I now live in Parker, CO and have been since my sophomore year of high school. I love living in Colorado and don't want to live anywhere else.I enjoy going camping and four wheeling with my boyfriend and his 85 and 86 Toyota trucks every chance we get over the summer. I was in Hays for four years while going to school and playing softball for the Tigers. I decided after my senior year to move back home and further my education online because the stress and emotional toll was getting to me. I also wanted to get my foot in the door in the school district I want to teach in eventually. I am in my last semester before student teaching and I am SO HAPPY this time has finally come. It took changing my major three times before my mom helped me realize that being a teacher was where I am suppose to be. When I was growing up I would always read to pretend students and play school with the neighborhood children. I have always loved working with children just took me a while to realize teaching was my calling. I work at our local recreation center as a Day Camp Counselor year round now that I am home for good. Over the summer we get up to 150 children and it is stressful at times and very exhausting, but it gives me experience with children and their parents. I hope everyone has a great semester!!

  23. Hello everyone! My name is Patti Isaac. I live in Meade, Kansas and I am a very busy wife and mother. I am working towards a degree in Elementary Education. I would like to teach 1st through 4th grade. When I began taking classes I wanted to teach 3rd grade only, but as I have progressed I am open to other areas. I have worked as a Para-educator and then a substitute teacher. I had the opportunity to teach in every grade from K-8. My favorite opportunity was teaching Kindergarten for six weeks. That experience was invaluable and super fun! It was also exhausting. I have three semesters (spring, summer and fall) left and then my student-teaching.
My husband and I have been married for almost 25 years now and we own a trucking company hauling milk. My oldest daughter and her husband live in Okinawa, Japan and they are in the Air Force. It has been over a year since I have seen them, but they plan to visit in March. My oldest son is attending college as well and is about six hours away. He loves it there. My youngest daughter enjoys playing basketball and will graduate from eighth grade this year. My youngest son is very active and also loves playing basketball. He is a diehard KU fan.
In my free time I enjoy watching movies with my family and I also like to scrapbook. As most of you know, free time is very rare while seeking a degree. I can look forward to that over the summer once I begin teaching. Good luck to everyone!

  24. Hi All! My name is Amy Whitson and I currently live in Wichita, Kansas. I have been married for 14 years and, and I have two beautiful, smart, witty, loving, girls (12 and 8) who are the joys of my life! We also share our house with two little West Highland Terriers that keep my lap warm on these cold days of winter. I am originally from Kansas, but moved to Texas where we lived for 10 years after I married my husband. I love music, singing is one of my passions, and I actually have a recorded song on a cd. I really enjoy reading just about anything, and I LOVE to create and decorate, and am an admitted Pinterest addict! I am involved in everything that my girls are involved in, which is voice lessons, volleyball and cheer. I was a social worker and a stay-home mommy, then went back to earn my teaching license, and taught in Texas for 2 years.
We have been back in Kansas now for 3 ½ years. I have been teaching for 6 years now, 3 years as a Pre-K teacher and 3 years as a special education teacher, which is currently my title. I work with 2nd and 3rd graders in the Maize USD, and I love it! After moving to Kansas, I discovered after not receiving all of my endorsements on my license that Kansas has very stringent licensing requirements! Although I earned all three from the state of Texas, and am only 9 hours from my graduate degree, Kansas only granted my Special Ed. and my ESOL endorsement, they did not grant my Elementary endorsement, so the State Department is requiring me to take several classes in the elementary area so that I can add the Elementary K-6 endorsement to my license. I am taking 11 hours this semester, 6 in the summer and 6 in the fall, and I will FINALLY and officially be able to teach in an elementary classroom in Kansas!

  25. Hello, my name is Angela Sears. I am a senior at FHSU and will be student teaching in the fall, which I am very, very excited about! I have been married for 18 years and have 2 beautiful girls ages 15 and 12. I also have a spoiled maltese named Daisy, who is my cuddle buddy. I was a licensed practical nurse for 13 years before I decided to go back and get a degree in elementary education. I loved nursing, but I always felt something was missing. I found that something when I started volunteering and working in the schools that my children were attending.

I live in St. Joseph, Missouri, but I am originally from Sulphur Springs, Texas. We have lived in St. Joseph for four years. My husband's job is the reason we relocated to this very cold part of the United States. For the past four years I have worked for the St. Joseph School District in several different areas. I began as a Family Involvement Coordinator then moved into a para position in special education. This led me to minor in special education. I now am a first grade para which has been a challenge this year to say the least. I love teaching and I look forward to the day I will have my own classroom.

During my free time (ha, ha) I enjoy reading Nicholas Sparks books, watching my 15 year old cheer on her high school squad and watch my 12 year old perform gymnastics. And then if there is extra time, I might get to go out on a date with my husband.

I am excited about learning different ways to teach social studies this semester. I wish everyone a great semester!!!

  26. WOW, great job everyone. I am pleased that you have taken this blog and ran with it. Loved hearing about your experiences and plans for teaching. It is a great way for me to know you all better. Also loved hearing about some of your experiences with the mustangs. haha Keep in mind that there are a lot of students in this class because I have combined both sections so the blog will get lengthy but I like it so much better than discussion boards in blackboard.

Before I start asking questions and making comments about the course and content we will be covering, I want to move from this point forward in the blog and allow you to ask any questions you may have about the class.

Some of you asked about recorded lectures or live sessions. NO. I believe that you all took online courses for a reason. You are not the same as our on-campus students so my instruction to you is different than to on-campus students. Other faculty members believe differently but this is my class and I try to make it relevant for all of you who are typically raising families, working full time, etc. I know what that is like. You get home from work and you have laundry and dinner and activities and homework with kids, etc, etc, etc. SO, I try to structure my class AROUND those things. You have 4 items to complete for each of the 4 modules. 16 assignments total. It is all explained in the announcements. DO NOT blow off the projects. They are a lot of points and I want to see quality work.
Remember to read what I said about blogging. Follow my lead.

Enough of that. So, from this post forward, ask any questions you have about the course.

    Thanks, Splichal

  27. On step 3 of the first project, you ask for "the specific text from that source which bolsters the characteristic as an effective teaching strategy and include the page numbers from which it came." How much text do you want? Do you want just the sentence or a paragraph? Thank you!! Jeni Weilert

  28. YES. Just the one or two sentences that support that specific topic. Copy it directly from the source. Splichal

  30. Hi,
My name is Lindsay Sabala and I currently live in Topeka, KS with my husband and our two very spoiled dogs. Currently, I work in retail management, but I have known for a while that I love teaching and as I have furthered my education my love for the profession has only grown. While I will take a class this summer, this is my last full semester of classes before student teaching. It seems it has taken me a long time to get here, but the journey has definitely been worth it. I am very excited for this semester, as I will be completing my internship in a 2nd grade classroom which will be a new experience for me since I have mostly worked with 4th and 5th grade students in the past. I hope everyone has a wonderful semester!

  31. Do you have a list of chapters to read along with each of the modules?

Can we complete future projects and turn them in to you before we've completed an entire module, or do we need to complete one module at a time, then work on the next?

  32. Hello, my name is Tiffany Goracke. Just as many of you, this is my last semester before Student Teaching in the fall. I currently live in Bonner Springs, KS. Just right by Kansas City, I actually only live about 4 miles away from the Kansas Speedway and the Legends Shopping area and in February they are opening a brand new Casino (Hollywood) I think….So very exciting times around here!

I grew up in McPherson, KS and when my husband and I got married we moved to Albuquerque, NM for his job with the government. After 4 years of living there, I finally got him back to the Midwest and hopefully this is where we will stay!!! We will celebrate our 10 year anniv this summer. We have a 4 year old son named Reed who we adore and hopefully after student teaching and getting a full time job, we will add to our family!

Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, I just didn’t realize then that I would be working my way towards becoming a Special Education Teacher, Hopefully!!!! I had a brother who was 8 years younger than I was who had Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. Ever heard of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon? So as you can imagine, my parents raised an awesome young man who impacted everyone single person he met. He passed away last August at the age of 22 and I knew in that moment my life would never be the same. He taught me so many things about myself and one of those things was that I had the patience and perseverance to do anything I wanted. This is something I want!!!!

I have worked as a Special Education Para for the last 7 years in a self contained classroom with some awesome children and my life couldn’t be fuller! This is my passion and I know I will be a great advocate for them and their families just as my lead teacher is now!

Good luck to everyone and Have a great semester!

  33. Hi my name is Jordan Poskey, I grew up in Chase, KS, which is a small town in western Kansas. All of my schooling, K-12, took place at USD 401 in Chase. After high school I attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in Sports Management. But after graduation I worked as a substitute teacher and knew that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. But just to test that theory I moved to Nevada and worked for a year as an equipment manager for the Athletic Department at the University of Nevada. During that year it was only confrimed to me that I really wanted to be a teacher. With that in mind I decided to go back to school and get my degree in Elementary Education. I am still an avid KU fan and in my free time I like to read and play golf.

  34. Amy, you can work on whatever you like, whenever you like. However, my phone calls for each module will focus on that module's project and other assignments.
As far as chapter readings, etc. If you look in Course Documents, you will find numerous resources that go along with chapters.

I will once again state what I did previously. You must follow my lead in the blog discussions. Please read my comments about blogging in blackboard. Always read my most recent comment and go from there. DO NOT talk about previous posts.

This point forward is to talk about any questions you have about the course before we get involved in other discussions.

So if you don't have any questions, don't post anything in the blog right now. If you do have questions, ask them.

    Thanks, Splichal

  35. First, I apologize for my last post. I wrote it before reading this post.
My question is in relation to chapter readings also. I see there are study guides to complete for specific chapters, with that being said, will we be discussing the study guides during our phones calls and if so what specific chapters should be completed for each module?

Thank you very much for all of your help!
    Angie

  36. No problem Angela.
Like I stated, the supplemental documents such as Chapter Study Guides, extra readings, test examples, etc, etc, etc, will be necessary in order for you to do exemplary work on the chapter projects and methods assignments. I won't be quizzing you on specific items in those chapters, rather, everything in the course goes hand in hand. I hope that helps.

My experience has been that those who do not read the chapters nor spend time looking at and understanding the supplemental documents do not do as well on the projects.

Its like trying to put together a new BBQ grill or new piece of furniture without reading the directions. You can do it and get it done, but it probably isn't done properly. Might burn your burgers!!! That would suck!

  39. This is my first experience with blogging. All my other courses we did discussion boards. So my question is since I didn't respond to the first blog to introduce yourself will there be points deducted? Also, when you ask questions throughout the semester and if I didn't get to respond to one before you moved onto the next one would that be a deduction in points as well? Basically how often would you recommend us checking and responding to the blog?

    Thanks!
    Kelsi Fluis

    ReplyDelete
  40. Kelsi, great question for EVERYONE to hear the answer.

BUT, I have a meeting right now. I will respond soon.

    Splichal

    ReplyDelete
  41. I had the same questions as Kelsi, how often do we need to check this, and do we get deducted for not responding to each topic? Also, how many blogs do we need to do in each "blogger"? Will one be enough or do we need to make several? Thanks, and look forward to your answers.

    ReplyDelete
  42. OK, in response to Kelsi's questions about blogging.
You do NOT need to respond a certain number of times. You will NOT be docked in grade based on the number of times you respond.

You MUST blog at least ONE time during each module. Remember, I grade based on how well you express your thoughts. Don't just say, "great blog Shea" or "I agree Kelsi" I want to see that you understand topics and that you can put your thoughts down clearly. In other words, make the blog meaningful and useful to others. That is what I will grade.

This is why I say, "follow my lead in blogging." I may post numerous questions throughout ONE blog/module. This does not mean you have to respond to each of them. Find my most recent blog and move forward from there. Do NOT respond to a blog I posted 3 times back. This is to be a discussion, not an assignment where you answer every question. If you did not respond to my first blog where you were to introduce yourself, you are NOT docked in grade. My questions are based on what you post and they won't be the same each semester. I determine questions to ask based on what you are blogging. One answer from one student may spark another area of interest that I would like to explore.

Find my most recent post and move FORWARD from there.

So. Moving forward from this blog, does anyone have any other questions? If you do not, then don't blog.

    I hope this helps. Splichal

    1. Hello Mr. Splichal, had a quick question on Project 1. When we locate 8 sources regarding characteristic/strategy, do you just want us to copy and past the part of the article into a document that talks about the specific characteristic. Then do we site the source at the end (like as a paper) or do we just put it with the article. Also When we call you how exactly are you grading us. Are you looking for anything in particular. (I'm not fond of talking on the phone, It makes me nervous especially when I know its for a grade.):)
Also I want to mention I really like the way the blackboard site is set up and the way the blog is set up. It so organized and easy to access. As a virtual student this makes my life a lot easier. Thanks

  44. Kristle, you can use supplemental documents however you want. If the proper APA information is included. As far as project 1, I would like you to research and find your own because you won't know what topics to research until you do the interviews. I hope that makes sense.

  46. Rebecca, I think my assignment instructions for Project 1 and very clear. Yes, copy and paste the actual document text that supports your strategy. Then the proper APA citation directly with the strategy. Look at my assignment again to get clarification.
My phone calls will be directed by your work in the projects and course information related to the project.

  53. Good afternoon Mr. Splichal!

I have a question about the Conceptual Framework assignment. I am confused as to what goals we are to be writing our reflection on. I remember seeing the Conceptual framework stating 7 goals underneath the "triangle framework" but I am not seeing those in your syllabus. Are we suppose to be writing the reflection over the course goals/objectives (list of 8) in relation to the conceptual framework or the Content Technology Pedagogy (TPACK) list of 7?

    Thank you for your help!

  56. That is so awesome Angie. I would love to visit there someday.

I am happy that you are thinking about your future classroom. Good work.

For everyone else. Let's talk about Subject and Purpose.

What is the author of the text talking about? Subject and Purpose? What does that mean?

    Thanks, Splichal

    ReplyDelete
  57. For the subject the author means the content that will be taught to the students in the classroom not limiting to the integration of culture, various issues, ideas, information, values and skills. The purpose refers to the decision the individual will make based upon how they would process the information given. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion but we also must be responsible for decisions that we make. For example we must uphold the laws of the land and it is our duty to be good citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Good analysis Sherine. What do others in the class think ???????????

    Thanks, Splichal

    ReplyDelete
  59. The subject is what you are going to teach. The text states that ""Subject matter" is the what of teaching and learning- the curriculum." The purpose is the bigger goals of the what you are teaching. The ultimate goal is to be able to make informed decisions and to be a responsible citizen. We must be open minded to diversity in our country and be aware of not only our own rights, but to do what is best for entire country. Sherine had an excellent description!

    ReplyDelete
  60. In regards to subject the author is talking about what is being taught and learned in the classroom. In other words, the curriculum that is being shared. This includes information, facts and data. The purpose is what the text calls "civic competence". This means that an individual can make the right decisions as a good citizens based on the laws that are provided. We may not agree with all of the laws that are set in place, but they must be obeyed. Because we live in such a diverse culture we should respect individuality. Being a good citizen means having that ability to to make reasoned decisions and respect all citizens that live among us within our society.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Charelle, I totally agree with you. The subject is what is being taught. Like Social Studies, math, reading ect. curriculum. Also, "civic competence" is a person choosing to do the right things based upon the laws that have been put into place. I like how you talked about individuality and I will add culture and religion to that. We must be aware of all of these facts when teaching children. We must respect there religious choices as well as the cultual diversity. In some cultures looking a person in the eyes is a sign of disrespect. However, here in the U.S. that shows respect. and so on....

      Delete
  61. When subject is mentioned in this textbook, the author is referring to the subject matter or curriculum. Facts, ideas, skills, issues are all part of the subject. Purpose refers to the ability the students should gain in order to make informed and rational decisions for the public's good. In other words it's how the students will carry out being a competent citizen.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The author explains that "subject matter is the what of teaching and learning--the curriculum. It includes the facts, ideas, skills, issues, and methods of inquiry drawn from the seven social sciences: history, geography, civics and government, economics, sociology, psychology, and antrhopology. The humanities--philosophy, ethics, literature, religion, music, and the visual and performing arts--are involved as well." The author explains that the subject matter is the meat of the lesson. It's the maincourse of the meal. The subject matter draws a little bit from the social sciences and humanities to become the most important and informative lesson a teacher can present to his/her students. "Purpose-civic competence or democratic citizenship: the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world." Purpose basically is the preparation of the students for the real world--how to live as a citizen and carry out the responsibilities of one person living among many. I like that the text points out that, "these responsibilities include more than voting...to server on juries, to be lawful, and to be just."

    ReplyDelete
  63. Excellent comments. So tell me, how do you accomplish this in the classroom? You all mentioned what the author says it SHOULD be but how do you accomplish that in the classroom?

    Splichal

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think it can be accomplished in the classroom by hands on activities and technology. Students can not be responsible citizens if they don't know the information that they need to be such. I think that by giving students activities that they can do themselves to better understand the "subject" will be beneficial. For example, teaching about how the government works, what better way to teach them than by letting them set up their own "government" and making their own laws? They will then understand the process of making laws and also learn how to go about changing them. For older grades, when discussing different types of government, they could complete a Venn diagram or some other type of graphic organizer to show how the different types of government are similar/different than ourown. When discussing history, I think that role playing would be a good way to help students understand what they are trying to learn. Technology can be used to allow students to view a law making session if a trip to the state capital is not in the budget. I think with the use of technology, students can have many experiences that they may not otherwise be able to have.

  67. It depends on what age group you have, but I agree with Jennifer. I think giving our students practice in seeing how government works would be as easy as allowing the students to decide their class rules as an example of a democracy. They all take part in the final decision and it is made by the people, for the people for the common good. This could also be done by having the students take turns with classroom jobs. Each student would have a turn in contributing to the needs of the community (the classroom) for example: someone to take care of the fish, plants, room cleanliness, leaders, paper passers, etc... It helps to practice what is learned. I think students should be able to vote on certain things as well as practice exercising their right as a classroom citizen. It gives them power and also gives them a voice.

    1. I agree 100% with Jennifer and Patti. Students need the hands on learning to be able to retain the information they are learning. Being able to carry out a role as a citizen, or as a part of government (as Patti mentioned), would be much more beneficial to a 3rd grader than simply reading a text would. This would give the student the chance to assume responsibility, govern over and with other students and feel as sense of pride in having a part in the way things work. Students want to have a say in what and how they learn and this is the perfect opportunity!

      Delete
    2. I totally agree with the part about hands on learning! Acting out things, or even revisiting past events and making the students a part of the "history" makes an impact that hopefully they carry with them. I remember when I was in 8th grade we did an entire courtroom scenario and the rules and regulations have stuck with me even as an adult!

    3. Sorry I wasn't signed in under the right account for this class. The above comment was mine (Tiffany_Goracke) :) Thanks!

    4. In order to accomplish the subject and the purpose in the classroom is by covering the curriculum and also introducing the broader scope of the material being taught. Once the students have a base-line of knowledge in the material being presented, then the teacher should tier up with cooperative learning strategies to present a broader, deeper, understanding of whatever unit is being taught! This could be done through additional reading, technology, projects, and blogging/or skype-ing with another classroom!

  68. FYI: I thought I'd share this tidbit if anyone is interested. The text suggests reading the book MY NAME IS YOON by Helen Recorvits. It is on You Tube. Here is the link:

I listened to it--it is a good story about a young child from Korea and the adjustments that would have to be made in a different country.

  69. Kevin,

Maybe you have already answered this question, but I did not see it when I was scanning through the blog. Do you have chapter readings listed anywhere in the Blackboard? I didn't know if we were supposed to read through the books at our own leisure, or if you had any assigned readings. Thanks so much! Carissa Williams

    1. Also, since I didn't introduce myself earlier in the blog here is a quick intro:

I am currently living with my family in Baileyville, Kansas. It is a small town in Northeast Kansas. My husband is a high school science teacher and I have a two-year old daughter, Wrigly. I received my first degree from K-State in advertising in 2006. I am now a para-educator at a local elementary school. Thanks for reading!

  70. Hands on learning is a great way for the information to "stick" for kids and me too! Any project that the kids are interested in and the new information can be related to can be a good tool to use. If there is already an interest in a topic it is a good base to build new information on.

  71. The author in the text is talking about subject and purpose being two sides of the definition of social studies. The author also mentioned subject is the curriculum and purpose is the readiness and willingness to take on citizen responsibilities. I think that means that what the students are learning s going to prepare them for what their abilities are as a citizen to the United States. It also means that students are going to receive the information they need because we have certain subjects that are taught in order for students to learn what they need to be active citizens.

You would accomplish the subject and the purpose by getting the students actively involved in what they are learning. Don’t just teach them have them, allow them to role play or do different mock things. The students are going to learn best by actually doing. You can also run your class like it’s a government and everyone is part of the government and work as a group to come up with the things citizens will follow.

  72. Love what I have read here. Those of you that participated in this discussion are right on track. Good work.

Carissa, to answer your question, there really is no "schedule" for chapter readings. I do want you to read the book and there are study guides to help with that in the Course Documents tab. There is a lot of good information in the book.

OK. Unless anyone has questions, lets stop blogging for Module 1 as to focus on the phone calls. No more blogging until I create a new thread for Module 2. So many other things to talk about and we will do more of that in Module 2.

  73. Sir; I actually had one quick queston. In the directions for Project 1 we are to list 8 items which are th most predominant characteristics, what if after talking to 4 colleagues, all the answers are basically the same? I truly only came up with 6 different responses. Would you suggest I use what I believe made my SS teacher the "best" to round out the 8?

  76. Mr. Splichal,

According to your syllabus, we had until the February 11th to blog on Module 1. Not having checked the blog since I introduced myself, I did not realize you cut it off on February 7th. I assumed this was like the blogging in my other classes. At least I know how it will work for the next module. How many points will I loose for not making a comment before you cut it off?

  77. Oops, Angela I was right there with you. I thought this was also due on the 11th. Anyways, I completely agree with what all of you said. I am a huge believer in hands-on activities and assignments other than reading from their texts. Social Studies can be such a fun subject because there are numerous activities you could incorporate into each lesson. There are many resources out there that also provides you with ideas. I know when I was younger I loved researching different things online and writing little reports about my findings. I believe this is a great way to learn new information and share it with classmates. Today, there are other great technology that you can use as a teacher to teach your students different material.

  78. Angela, you said you had not checked the blog since you introduced yourself. I want to explain to all students that you should check the blog more frequently. Further, I am not docking anyone's grade in the blog unless they did not make at least ONE post. Remember, as I said previously, I do not grade on the number of times you post. What I do grade it the QUALITY of the post you do make. If you only posted the introduction of yourself and you did not check back into the blog until later, you missed a lot of information that other students were posting. Questions they had, answers from me, etc, etc, etc. Your grade won't suffer if you didn't post after your initial introduction but what is going to suffer is the education you should be getting from reading the blogs. Module one was mostly for questions and answers but I did include some information toward the end about Subject and Purpose. Some students had some very good input that you missed out on. Respectfully, Splichal

  79. My Name is Cassy Docusen
I grew up in Metro Detroit MI and went to college in Kalamazoo MI at Western Michigan University.
I then moved with my fiance who got a teaching job to Garden City KS. I work as para right now finishing up my teaching degree at FHSU.
I am super excited to be a teacher. I am finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and will be done next year. I have always wanted to inspire others and make an influence on their life. I know that going into education you encounter challenges but I am willing to work through them. I have learned a lot working as a para and my experience is growing. I have two dogs and I love them- they are my babies. I like to watch sports, read, cook and stay active. I look forward to working with you in this class.

  80. Hi, My name is Kasey Konda. I live in Wichita, KS with my husband Kurt and our son Kameron. Kameron is 4 and we are expecting a baby in August! I have been a stay at home mom up until now, but I am able to do my internships at my son's school while he is in Pre-K.
I am in my first semester of internships, and it has already been exciting. I am working in a Catholic school in Wichita, and it is an interesting experience since I have only been exposed to public schools for my life up until now.
I am ready to dive into this semester and work towards my (most of ours) end goal in 3 short semesters.

  81. Cassy,
I was also a para for several years and this experience made me what to have my own classroom so I could be the one to facilitate the learning in the classroom.
    Good luck this semester,
    Jennifer P.
